This semester, the first group of Communication students enrolled in Dr. Weisgerber's COMM3309 e-portfolio pilot program will be submitting their Communication portfolios in a digital format. The students will build custom Wordpress sites to demonstrate their mastery of 10 different learning outcomes set by the Department. The e-portfolio itself will serve as a means to evaluate one of the 10 competencies, namely the "professionalism" competency. For further information, please refer to the Communication e-Portfolio Site.

Dr. Innes Mitchell gave a presentation entitled, “Pretty, Ugly, Man-Enough?: Evaluating Body Image in an Age of Social Media” on Tuesday, February 25, as part of the Body Awareness Month program. The program is organized by Pete Erickson, the Wellness and Outreach Services Coordinator for the Health and Counseling Center at St. Edward's University. Research for the presentation and the discussion portion of the event was conducted by Communication Senior Austin Hestdalen. Approximately 60 students attended the event in the Maloney Room.
Uly Lopez, a former Communication major with a focus on Media Arts and Broadcast Journalism, recently landed a role in the film Marfa Girl, a movie which won the Marcus Aurelius Award for Best Film at the 2012 Rome Film Festival.
Lopez has found a home in the Austin film industry, acting in four films by Robert Rodgriguez's Troublemaker Studios since the release of "Marfa Girl." Most recently he's appeared in scenes with Nicolas Cage, Powers Booth, and Jessica Alba. Director David Gordon Green who directed Lopez in the upcoming film "Joe" said of his performance, "He's a one take wonder." In an interview in the Hilltop Views, Lopez credited Communication classes such as Film Theory, Media Communication and Visual Communication as having helped prepare him for a career in acting. "Lopez said to this day he still finds himself looking at his Film Theory book and his Communication Research books." As Lopez explains in his IMDb biography, he played football at Shippensburg University but left after his freshman year due to 9/11 and felt compelled to join the United States Army. While in the Army, he was on the Army Boxing Team in Dexheim, Germany and was later stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He became a Sergeant and served two tours in Iraq under the command of the 4th Infantry Division. Upon returning from Iraq, he enrolled at St. Edward's University to pursue a communication degree. While in Austin, he was finally able to pursue his dream of acting. |
