Dr. Magnan-Park's presentation, entitled Exorcizing Shame, Exercising Masculinity: From Lu Xun to Bruce Lee, will explore 19th century caricatures that reduced China to "the sick man of Asia" preoccupied with “meaningless spiritual victories.” He will discuss how Bruce Lee’s films transformed China's image to the "strong man of Asia” and in the process created a “new template of Chinese masculinity” that ultimately resulted in international emulation.
He has taught at Victoria University of Wellington, the University of Iowa, Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, the American University of Paris, and Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV).
Dr. Magnan-Park's presentation is scheduled from 7-8 p.m. in Jones Auditorium in the Ragsdale Center.
Light refreshments will be served.
